What Are the Causes of Ringworm in the Genital Area?

Ringworm in the genital area is commonly referred to as jock itch or tinea cruris. The culprits responsible for ringworm infections are a group of tiny mold-like fungi called dermatophytes.

  1. Cause

    • Ringworm is spread either through skin-to-skin contact or skin-to-object contact. Jock itch can be acquired through clothing, towels, bed linens, shower surfaces, contact with someone with athlete̵7;s foot and sexual contact.

    Identification

    • Symptoms of ringworm in the genital area include a scaly rash around the groin, upper thighs and buttocks. Some people may also feel a burning sensation.

    Treatment

    • According to the Mayo Clinic, your physician may suggest over-the-counter antifungal treatments for mild jock itch. If the infection is more serious, your physician may prescribe topical medicines like oxiconazole (Oxistat) or oral medicines like terbinafine (Lamisil).

    Prevention/Solution

    • Since fungi thrive in the warm and wet areas of the body, keep the groin and inner thigh area clean and dry. Also avoid clothes that are tight and don̵7;t allow the skin to breathe.

    Warning

    • If you develop symptoms such as swelling and fever and if your rash doesn̵7;t improve within two weeks, the Mayo Clinic suggests contacting your healthcare provider.
