Terramycin for Puppies

A brand name medication, Terramycin contains the tetracyline antibiotic medication oxytetracycline. Veterinarians commonly prescribe Terramycin to treat bacterial infections in all ages, including puppies.

  1. Function

    • In a puppy's body, Terramycin works by preventing bacterial cells from producing chemicals that the bacteria need to grow. Without these chemicals, the bacteria cells become weak, allowing the puppy's body to fight off the infection.

    Uses

    • For puppies, Terramycin is most commonly used for respiratory and wound infections, pneumonia and infections of the mouth and blood cells, reports Pet Place.

    Dosage

    • Veterinarians typically prescribe 10mg of Terramycin for every pound a puppy weighs to be taken every 12 hours, reports Pet Place. How long the puppy must take the medicine varies based upon the type and severity of the infection.

    Risks

    • In puppies, the use of Terramycin may result in a permanent yellowing or discoloration of the teeth, cautions Mar Vista Animal Medical Center. Nausea and vomiting may occur in dogs of all ages.

    Considerations

    • Puppies with compromised immune systems or those with kidney problems should not take Terramycin, warns Mar Vista Animal Medical Center.
