How to Raise a Lab Puppy in the Winter

Winter can be a wonderful season full of snowball fights, sleigh rides, and walks through the snow with your new puppy. Many breeds, such as Siberian Huskies and Samoyeds, were bred to survive even the harshest cold weather elements. These hardy dogs, and other breeds including Labrador Retrievers, can be susceptible to the ravages that come with winter exposure, such as frostbite and hypothermia.

Things You'll Need

  • Puppy coat or sweater
  • Towel
  • Dog bed

Instructions

    • 1

Avoid leaving your puppy outside for extended periods of time. Puppies have trouble regulating their body temperature and can become cold very quickly. When it is time to take your puppy to void outdoors, bring him or her outside, allow it to potty and quickly bring the puppy back indoors.

    • 2

Dry your puppy off with a warm towel if he or she gets wet outdoors or after a bath. The puppy can quickly become cold even in your warmer home. Pay special attention to the puppy's paws and pads because moisture can cause cracking.

    • 3

Offer your puppy a dog bed if he or she will be sleeping on a hard surface during the winter months. The floor can become cold easily during the colder months of year. Also, avoid placing this bed near drafty doors or windows.

    • 4

Groom your puppy during the winter months. This ensures its coat is clean and able to insulate the dog as much as possible.

    • 5

Purchase a coat or sweater for your puppy if he or she gets cold easily when outdoors.

    • 6

Rinse your puppy's paws off if he or she has walked on rock salt or ice melting substances, as they may irritate your puppy's sensitive foot pads.

    • 7

Consult a veterinarian if your puppy becomes ill during the winter months, as they are more susceptible to illness during this time.
