Identification of Roundworm Pupae

Roundworm is probably the most common parasite infection in dogs and cats. Many animals do not have symptoms until the infestation has become severe. Signs your pet may be infected include vomiting, coughing and a pot belly.

  1. Where to Look

    • Looking for roundworms is not a pleasant undertaking. Roundworms will appear either in the vomit or the stool of your pet.

    Color

    • Roundworms will appear either white or light beige in color.

    Size

    • The size of the worms depends on their age and how well fed they are. According to veterinarian Dr. Holly Frisby on the Animal Planet website, these worms can range from 3 to 7 inches in length.

    Appearance

    • The consensus is that roundworms look like spaghetti.

    Eggs

    • Your pet can pass millions of eggs a day in their feces. These eggs are not infective in fresh feces, but the larvae continue to develop and become infective in about a month, then remain infective for months afterward.
