Etodolac Side Effects in Dogs

Etodotac is an anti-inflammatory medication that is used for the treatment of dogs. There are some serious side effects associated with the use of Etodotac.

  1. Identification

    • Etodolac may be used for pain relief in dogs that suffer from arthritic conditions. One dose is given to dogs daily. This medication is not safe for use in cats.

    Side Effects

    • Some of the most common side effects associated with the use of Etodolac are nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and diarrhea. Some dogs may experience dry eye (or Keratoconjunctivitis), which a lack of tear production. This can be severe, and some dogs may not regain tear production even after discontinuing Etodolac.

    Drug Safety

    • The age of the pet and the dosage is a factor in the severity of side effects. Older pets may have more serious side effects, due to the fact that the dosage may not clear completely from the body. This may lead to a stronger dosage of the medication. More serious side effects include stomach ulcers, loss of kidney function and bleeding.

    Drug Interactions

    • Etodolac must not be taken in conjunction with corticosteroid hormones such as prednisone or dexamethasone because it may increase the severity of side effects. It is important to wait at least one week after stoping steroid medications before using Etodolac.

    Warning

    • Etodolac is not indicated for use in dogs with liver or kidney disease. Proper liver function tests should be performed every six months to access the function of the liver while taking this medication. Etodolac should not be used in pregnant or nursing females. Dogs that have had any stomach ulcerations should not take this medication due to the increased risk of stomach bleeding.
