Side Effects of Cephalexin in Dogs

When a dog has a bacterial infection, a veterinarian often prescribes Cephalexin (Keflex) as an antibiotic. Cephalexin is used to treat urinary tract or respiratory infections. Bone and joint infections often respond well to this drug. Cephalexin is usually given as capsules, tablets or liquid medication. This medication sometimes has side effects that should be reported to the veterinarian.

  1. Vomiting

    • Vomiting is the most common side effect of Cephalexin. Diarrhea may also be a less-common sign of digestive sensitivity to the drug. Giving the medication with a meal may ease these symptoms.

    Loss of Appetite

    • Some dogs have a temporary loss of appetite while taking antibiotics such as Cephalexin.

    Excitability

    • Watch for behavioral changes in the dog such as excitability or rapid breathing.

    Itching

    • A dog allergic to penicillin or cephalosporin may have a reaction to Cephalexin. Allergic reactions include itching, rash or difficulty breathing.

    Precautions

    • Do not mix Cephalexin with other medications, especially other antibiotics.
