According to Natural Dog Health, canine glaucoma affects one in every 12 dogs in the US. Glaucoma is a condition in which the fluid the eye produces does not get drained out normally. The filter between the cornea and the sclera also does not work properly, and as a result, the excessive fluid gradually destroys the retina, diminishing eyesight. Another major problem with glaucoma is that in both dogs and humans it is not detected early. The earliest warning signs--rubbing of eyes, squinting, redness, and watering--are usually ignored.

Bilberry
-
Several home remedies for glaucoma in dogs exist. Bilberry is one of the most popular herbal remedies for glaucoma. Bilberry has active substances such as anthocyanoside flavanoid and inactive substances like vegetable polysaccharide, magnesium stearate, and cellulose that reduce the eye pressure. It also has nutrients that nourish the eyes. Dogs that weigh less than 25 lbs should take a quarter capsule daily; for those between 25 and 50 lbs, it is half capsule a day. For dogs that weigh between 51 and 100 lbs, the dosage is one capsule daily, while those that weigh over 100 lbs should be given 1-1/2 to two capsules a day.
Gingko
-
Ginkgo is another substance that acts as an effective natural treatment for glaucoma. It has qualities that enhance the supply of blood into the eyes. It strengthens the nerves of the eyes, as well. Gingko can be used alone or in conjunction with other treatments to help strengthen the eye and diminish the effects of glaucoma.
Other Remedies
-
Burdock is another good remedy. It is a detoxifying agent and thus cleanses the eye of its impurities. Combined with celandine, it also helps boost the immune system, keeping the infection at bay. These treatments can also be combined with rosemary, which helps control the inflammation. Meadowsweet is another substance that soothes the eye.
A brand that goes by the name of Eye Heal has most of these substances mixed together. Five drops of Eye Heal can be put into 20 ml of boiled and cooled water. Soak a cotton swab with the material and apply to the eye three times a day.
Another natural treatment method involves making an herbal eyewash consisting of eyebright herb, bayberry bark, goldenseal, and a half part cayenne pepper. Rinse each eye two or three times daily with the mixture using an eyecup.
