Canine Symptoms of Stiffness

Canine stiffness is a common problem among older dogs or those with orthopedic issues. There are many symptoms your dog can display if it is suffering from stiffness. Stiffness is usually indicative of a larger problem, and the only way to alleviate the stiffness is to diagnose the cause.

  1. Problems Getting Up

    • If a dog is feeling stiff, it will likely have difficulty rising up from lying down, particularly after sleeping. The stiffness will make it hard for the dog to go from resting to standing up and is especially taxing on the back legs. Consider getting a heated bed for your dog, as this may help to soothe the stiffness while it sleeps and help to lessen the pain when it gets up.

    Difficulty Walking

    • Limping, lameness and refusal to walk are all symptoms of stiffness within a dog. If a dog is painful or stiff, it will have difficulties maneuvering its legs and joints in its usual manner. Therefore, it may favor a leg or not want to walk at all if the pain and stiffness are just too much. In addition, the dog may not be able to get up the steps as it did before. Perhaps get a ramp for the dog to make it up or down the stairs, or keep all the of the dog's necessities on one floor to eliminate its need to travel on the stairs. Take your dog to the veterinarian to diagnose what is causing the stiffness when moving. Hip dysplasia and arthritis are common conditions in which stiffness and trouble getting around are symptoms.

    Pain

    • If you touch your dog's hip or other joint area, and the dog yelps, pulls away, growls or even attempts to bite, it is likely experiencing pain. In addition, a dog with stiffness in its neck or back may walk or move in a rigid manner. Back or neck stiffness can be indicative of a disc or vertebrae issue and should be treated by a veterinarian immediately.

    Decreased Activity Level

    • If your dog used to run, play and have lots of energy, but now doesn't, it could be experiencing stiffness. Stiffness can cause a dog to limit activity, and this is particularly alarming with dogs who are typically playful and on-the-go. This stiffness can be caused by an orthopedic problem that may possibly be treated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or glucosamine supplements. Consult with your veterinarian about treatment options.
