Puppy Asthma & Coughing

Asthma is a rare condition in dogs and is rarer still in puppies. It is an overreaction of the immune system to a foreign substance that causes the bronchi to swell, fill with mucus, and begin to spasm, preventing proper airflow to the lungs.

  1. Symptoms

    • The hallmark symptom of an asthma attack in dogs is strained coughing, wheezing and gasping. Coughing may persist for several minutes or 10 or more minutes. Keeping the dog calm during an asthma attack will help the coughing subside more quickly. Coughing can also be a symptom of other conditions, so proper diagnosis by a veterinarian is paramount.

    Diagnosis

    • Diagnosing asthma in puppies requires a visit to the vet. The vet will take X-rays and a detailed history of any previous attacks. The veterinarian will rule out other conditions such as parasites, cancer, or an upper respiratory infection.

    Treatment

    • Treatment for puppies with asthma will include the administration of corticosteroids, antihistamines, and bronchodilators. It is treated much the same way as human asthma.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Preventing asthma attacks in a puppy is crucial to successful treatment. Take careful notes about what the puppy is doing--where he is, what he's eaten, etc.-- when the coughing bouts begin. Avoid situations known to trigger an asthma attack.

    Considerations

    • Asthma in dogs is not curable, but it is manageable. See a veterinarian as soon as possible after an attack to ensure that your pet is diagnosed properly and a treatment protocol is begun.
