Rimadyl is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use in dogs. Veterinarians use Rimadyl, also known as carporfen, to treat short-term and long-term pain and inflammation.

Uses
-
Veterinarians frequently prescribe Rimadyl to treat osteoarthritis in dogs. Vets sometimes use it to treat other kinds of pain, as well, such as surgical pain.
Administration
-
Rimadyl comes in three forms: liver-flavored chewables, capsules and injections. The best way to administer the drugs depends on the dose needed, the dog's condition and the dog's preference. Some dogs dislike the chewables, for instance, and may accept capsules or injections more readily. Others seem to enjoy the chewables.
Dose
-
Rimadyl comes in doses of 25 mg, 75 mg and 100 mg. Dogs can take Rimadyl once a day, or the daily dose may be divided in two and given once in the morning and once in the evening.
Side Effects
-
Possible side effects of Rimadyl include stomach ulcers, excessive bleeding, kidney problems and liver problems (hepathopathy). Dogs with kidney or liver problems should not use Rimadyl due to the increased risk of problems.
Warnings
-
Pregnant or nursing dogs should not take Rimadyl. Dogs should not take Rimadyl with other NSAIDS. Cats should not take Rimadyl.
