Over-the-Counter Treatments for Dog Ear Yeast Infections

Yeast infections are more common in dogs with droopy ears, because the long ears block air circulation. You can treat a mild yeast infection at home with products obtained over the counter. If the infection is longstanding or more serious, it will require the care of a veterinarian. Vet Info states that oozing and a foul odor in the ear usually signify a yeast infection.

  1. Gentian Violet

    • A mixture of rubbing alcohol, boric acid powder and Gentian Violet solution effectively treats dog ear infections. Once the infection has cleared, monthly treatments with this mixture will help avoid a recurrence.

    White Vinegar

    • A tablespoon of white vinegar added to the dog's water bowl each day will acidify the dog's body and help prevent yeast infections.

    Yogurt/Acidophilus

    • A daily spoonful of plain yogurt, with active live cultures, helps prevent yeast infections. Normal bacteria in your dog's system will keep the yeast under control. Most dogs love yogurt and consider it a treat. Acidophilus capsules, from a health food store, will also provide live cultures.

Apple Cider Vinegar and Hydrogen Peroxide

    • Apple cider vinegar mixed with hydrogen peroxide (equal parts each) will remove much of the debris and dried blood, and it will soothe any soreness. This mixture can be warmed and applied with cotton balls (not Q-tips) to clean the ears.

    Zymox Otic

    • Zymox Otic, a pet medication, contains active enzymes that effectively treat yeast and bacterial infections. The manufacturer states that this product is safe if the dog should swallow it.

    Vinegar and Isopropyl Alcohol

    • A warmed solution of equal parts of vinegar and alcohol will clean and soothe the ear canal. The vinegar cleans the ear, and the alcohol helps to dry it. The Healthy Pet advises that you keep water out of the dog's ears.

Olive Oil with Tea Tree Oil

    • Life Extension notes that tea tree oil has antifungal properties and may be an effective topical treatment. One drop of tea tree oil added to ¼ cup of olive oil will clean and soothe the outer ear. It will also protect the ear and promote healing.

    Garlic Powder

    • Garlic powder, sprinkled in the ear, will help control the yeast and keep the infection from returning. It will also help keep the ear dry.
