Tylan for Diarrhea in Dogs

Diarrhea can make your dog miserable and is often difficult to deal with. Work with your veterinarian to determine the cause of this condition, and to see if a medication such as Tylan can benefit your dog. Tylan can react negatively with some medications, so use only under veterinary supervision.

  1. Tylan

    • Tylosin is an antibiotic with anti-inflammatory properties. Tylan is the brand name given to this medication.

    Diarrhea

    • Tylan can be useful for certain cases of diarrhea, such as those caused by colitis. It should not be used for diarrhea that is caused by stress.

    Oral Form

    • This drug is usually given orally in pill form. Tylan has a bitter flavor, so it may be difficult to administer.

    Injection Form

    • Tylan can also be administered via an injection, especially if you have trouble giving your dog its pills. Skin irritation may occur as a result of the injection.

    Side Effects

    • Tylan is usually well tolerated and has few side effects. Intestinal upset may occur.

    Dosage

    • While dosage may vary, typically a dog will receive 5 to 10 mg per pound, and it will be given every 12 hours for about 6 weeks. Work closely with your veterinarian to determine how much Tylan to give your dog and how long it should remain on the medication.
