Depression in dogs is a mental disease caused by a variety of environmental or physiological factors. The symptoms of depression in dogs are very similar to many human depression symptoms. Knowing your dog's typical behavior and paying attention to changing circumstances can help diagnose depression. Fortunately, depression in dogs is treatable through medication and changes in routine.

What is Depression in Dogs?
-
Dogs are susceptible to depression just like their human companions. This mental disease is believed by most veterinarians to be related to anxiety, but there is no concrete evidence as to what goes on in the animal's brain during depression.
Causes
-
Depression in dogs can be caused by a variety of circumstances. For example, the death or absence of a family member--either a human or another pet--can trigger depression. Sudden routine changes like new owners or a new living environment can also make dogs depressed. Confined or solitary dogs have a risk of becoming depressed. Past traumatic experiences such as abuse or neglect can affect dogs later in life and often cause depression. Diseases like hyperthyroidism that lower metabolic activity are also linked to depression.
Symptoms
-
Dogs suffering from depression are often constipated or have a lack of appetite. They are often apathetic or show a decreased interest in playing and being active. Depressed dogs will often become aloof and isolated. Some dogs also exhibit strange behaviors like searching and sniffing in the corners of the house. When identifying symptoms, it is also important to look at the dog's circumstances. If one or more of the aforementioned causes are present--combined with some of the classic symptoms--it may be time to make an appointment with your veterinarian.
Diagnosis
-
Diagnosis of depression in dogs is difficult. Because dogs can't talk and relate their problems and thinking, depression can often be confused with another disease or physical problem. Physiological disorders, not eating enough, and allergies can all exhibit symptoms comparable to depression.
Treatment
-
Medications such as Prozac have proven effective in treating dogs with depression. There are also a few simple things you can do to boost your dog's mood. Make sure your dog gets plenty of exercise and stays active. Take him for a walk. Change the scenery and walk a different route. If your dog recently lost a companion, try to expose him to other dogs for some good social time or look in to purchasing a new companion.
