Caring for an amputee is challenging both physically and emotionally. If the amputee is someone you love, it's emotionally draining to see them go through this. However, by helping with their care you are not only healing their scars on the outside, but on the inside as well.
Instructions
Clean the new wound thoroughly. It's best to do this in the evening so the skin has less of a chance of becoming irritated. Use warm water and anti-bacterial soap for the best results. Applying medicated lotion works wonders for an amputee.
Keep the socket, sock, sheath and insert clean. Be sure to clean them daily to prevent bacteria and infection. Dry them thoroughly when finished.
Monitor the skin's condition for irritation and infection. If skin becomes irritated it can be quite uncomfortable, therefore affecting the function of the prosthesis. A properly functioning prosthesis is important for an amputee.
Support the amputee emotionally. Losing a limb is a traumatic experience. Taking them to appointments and caring for them at home will help them heal. Ask them if there's anything they need and tell them that you're there to listen if they have problems. Finding a support group of other amputees will also help them emotionally.
Call the doctor immediately if you notice a change in the amputee's skin. It's crucial to handle problems quickly because of the delicate nature of the skin. Waiting too long can cause irreparable damage. Although keeping the skin and prosthesis clean should prevent irritation, close monitoring is still advised.
