Tylosin, an antibiotic marketed under the brand name Tylan, is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use in livestock but not in dogs and cats. Nevertheless, veterinarians prescribe Tylan powder or use the injectable form off-label for treatment of chronic diarrhea in canines and felines. Horses should never receive Tylan, as it can kill off beneficial gut flora, causing potentially fatal diarrhea.
