Pomeranians and Allergies

Up to 20% of dogs suffer from allergies, and Pomeranians are one of the breeds most likely to develop allergies. If your Pomeranian shows symptoms such as paw licking, nose itching or face rubbing, he likely suffers from allergies. Specific symptoms can indicate specific allergies.

  1. Pollen Allergies

    • Itching near outdoor plants during high pollen-count days indicates pollen allergies, in which you should avoid letting your Pomeranian remain outdoors for long. Pomeranians are a breed likely to develop skin disorders due to allergies. Use vitamin E to soothe such irritation.

    Dust Allergies

    • Itching around dust indicates dust allergies in which you should avoid letting your Pomeranian around excessive dust. Again, use vitamin E to soothe irritation.

    Shampoo Allergies

    • Switch to an allergy free shampoo. Also, use allergy free detergent. Itching should stop in one to two weeks. Rub vitamin E on the skin as it heals.

    Flea Allergies

    • Test and treat your Pomeranian for fleas if needed. Pomeranians can be allergic to flea saliva.

    Food Allergies

    • Vomiting and diarrhea indicate food allergies. Avoid buying dog food from the grocery store. Try dog food manufactured specifically for the toy breed. Experiment with different foods and observe your Pomeranian's reactions. Another option is fresh, clean raw and home-cooked meat.

    Medication Allergies

    • Coughing, sneezing, shortness of breathe, a wheezing noise and discharge of mucus from the dog's mouth or nose indicate medication allergies. For these symptoms, rush your dog to a vet experienced in treating the breed.
