Signs & Symptoms of Lead Poisoning in Dogs

Lead becomes a problem when its traces in the dog's blood reach toxic proportions. Lead poisoning results either from acute exposure -- short-term exposure to high doses -- or chronic exposure that results from long-term exposure to low-level doses of lead. The digestive system and the central nervous system are the parts of the animal's body most likely to become affected by lead poisoning.

  1. Symptoms of Lead Poisoning

    • A dog with lead poisoning may have abdominal pain that results in poor appetite, vomiting, diarrhea and lethargy. The digestive issues might also lead to physical weakness. The nervous system is involved, creating symptoms such as anxiety, hysteria, seizures and blindness. The dog may also have muscle spasms, become uncoordinated, change behaviorally and walk in circles.
