Chiggers, or harvest mites, are minuscule, red, six-legged wingless larva parasites whose bite can result in itchy skin irritations that have the potential to become infected if overly scratched. While chiggers don̵7;t carry disease, and some dogs aren̵7;t bothered by them, chigger mites can lead to miserable scratching for both dogs and their human companions.

Chiggers are typically most active in fall and spring and are found in tall, grassy areas. Chiggers cause damage while in larva form, when they attach to unsuspecting hosts as they travel through brush. Dogs are most often bitten on their underbelly, legs, toes and in small-stature dogs, on the neck and face. The chiggers bite their hosts and inject saliva that breaks down tissue and leads to itching and irritation. Some dogs aren̵7;t bothered, but those with skin sensitivities may be seen scratching and biting at infected areas.

According to the National Institutes of Health, chiggers are prevalent in the Central, Midwest and Southern parts of the United States, and thrive in moist climates. The best way to avoid your dog being bitten by chigger mites is to keep your pup away from areas where he̵7;s likely to come in contact with the mites. Keeping your yard mowed and steering clear of areas with tall grass can help. If you take your dog for a walk in the woods, treat him with a vet-recommended insect repellent first and wash him down with water and a cloth as soon as you leave chigger-infested areas. This can reduce the potential for bite severity and irritation.

Evidence of chigger bites can be difficult to see, as a bite resembles a tiny red or yellow dot. The chigger ingests saliva through the bite to break down tissue for feeding. Your first indication of chigger bites on your dog may be excessive itching, which should be evaluated by a vet. Your canine health professional may treat your dog with an antihistamine, a topical anti-itch medication or a medicated bath to relieve symptoms. In severe cases, an Elizabethan collar may be recommended if your pup is biting at or scratching bites. Open wounds can lead to other forms of infection and slow the healing process.

If you̵7;ve taken your dog for a walk and he gets chiggers, there̵7;s a good chance you have them too. In some cases, your pup may transfer chiggers to you. Take the same type of preventive steps to avoid getting chigger bites, and take a shower and scrub exposed areas thoroughly if you think you̵7;ve been in chigger-infested areas. Topical anti-itch creams such as hydrocortisone creams may help relieve the itching if you find yourself plagued by itchy bites.
