It's no secret to any dog owner that dogs get stressed sometimes. Some dogs might be stressed because of temporary situations like going to the groomer or seeing the vet, while other dogs can have an underlying stress disorder. Both prescription and over-the-counter solutions are available to help deal with this problem, but first, talk to your veterinarian about ways--medical and otherwise--to solve this issue.
-
Rescue Remedy
-
Rescue Remedy works well for pets who have trouble taking oral medication. This medication comes in the form of liquid drops and can be placed directly on the pet's tongue or in his food or water. This medication contains flower essences like helianthemum, clematis, and impatiens and should calm your dog down in about 30 to 60 minutes without making him overly sleepy or drowsy.
Ultra-Calm Treats
-
This medication should be easy to give to your dog because it comes in the form of beef liver. These calming treats shouldn't be used every day but can be used for stressful events such as traveling, dog shows, a trip to the vet or a visit to the groomer. The Ultra-Calm treats are all-natural and contain valerian extract, inositol, chamomile and Vitamin C.
Anti-Anxiety Medicine
-
If your dog's anxiety has reached a peak, your veterinarian can prescribe either clomipramine or amitriptyline. Although these medications do the trick, they are serious antidepressants usually meant for humans. In addition, these medicines can cause serious side effects such as diarrhea, sedation, low blood pressure, dry mouth and decreased saliva production.
