List of Puppy Vaccinations

Taking a puppy to its first and follow-up veterinarian visits is one of the most important things a pet owner can do. Puppies need different shots, wormers and pills to make sure they're healthy and will stay healthy, saving puppy stress and major dollars down the road. Prevention is key when it comes to puppy health.

  1. Distemper 5 in 1

    • Distemper is a viral infection that many animals can get, but in dogs is categorized by loss of appetite, discharge from the nose and eyes, vomiting, fever, lethargy and other symptoms.

This vaccination, also know as DHLPP, should be administered from age six to eight weeks. The 5 in 1 protects against canine distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parainfluenza and parvo virus. This shot has to be administered three times, and your veterinarian will schedule a vaccination with you after the first appointment.

    Rabies

    • This vaccination is required by law, and your veterinarian should give you a rabies tag, showing that your puppy has been vaccinated. The rabies shot is good for one year the first time, then for three years each time following. This is normally given at nine to 12 weeks.

    Bordetella

    • This vaccination prevents kennel cough, an upper respiratory infection that causes a cough. This is optional, but is recommended for dogs who are often around a number of different dogs daily.

    Lyme Disease

    • This vaccination is especially recommended for outdoor dogs, hunting dogs or any dogs that may pick up dangerous ticks in tall grasses and under trees.

    Giardia

    • This parasite lives in a dog's intestines and is passed through feces. This is a two-time shot and should be discussed with your veterinarian. It is not necessary in some regions and climates.

    Canine Leukemia

    • This is an optional vaccination, but most veterinarians recommend it. If the dog will be spending time outside (other than to do its business or go on walks), or if it's regularly around strange dogs, the canine leukemia vaccination should be administered.

    Heartworm

    • Most often in a tasty chewy medication, heartworm medication is important for all dogs. Once the dog contracts heartworm, it can be fatal. Veterinarians can offer the best form of treatment for your dog, which normally comes in a monthly tab.
