How to Help a Dog with a Skin Rash

Skin rashes on a dog can be troublesome, irritating and persistent. As an owner, you can do several things to ease your dog's suffering and help your beloved pet heal from the skin rash faster. A dog's consistent scratching at inflamed and irritated skin can cause further infection to develop.

Things You'll Need

  • Baking soda
  • Water
  • Milk of Magnesia
  • Cotton balls
  • Aloe vera juice or gel
  • Plastic gloves (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Mix baking soda and warm water together to make a paste. Apply the paste directly to the inflamed or itching skin. Move the fur aside if necessary to allow the paste to get to the skin. This paste will have a cooling effect and should help relieve itching. Reapply the paste as needed or as often as the dog begins to show signs of uncontrolled or persistent scratching.

Pour Milk of Magnesia onto a cotton ball and dab it on the patch of skin where the dog keeps scratching. Dab enough so that the Milk of Magnesia covers the area but not so much that it runs down the skin. If the dog happens to lick the small amount of Milk of Magnesia off, it shouldn't cause increased bowel movements.

Apply aloe vera juice or gel with your fingers onto the affected skin of the dog. You can buy aloe vera juice or gel in many grocery and health-food stores and pharmacies.
