Things You'll Need

  • Dog ear wash
  • Cotton balls
  • Dog treats

Instructions

    • 1

Get a good ear wash made especially for dogs. This can be bought from your veterinarian or most pet supply stores. Have your vet recommend a good ear wash for your dog.

    • 2

Squirt the ear wash directly into the dog's ear canal. Use enough so that it coats the entire inside of the ear. The dog may jump when the liquid hits its ear, so don't stick the bottle inside the ear canal. Hold the bottle at least 2 inches away from the dog.

    • 3

Use the dog's own ears to massage the ear wash into the skin. If the dog has short ears, you may need to use a soft wash cloth. Be very gentle when doing this to avoid hurting the dog. Some dogs may actually find a gentle ear massage to be relaxing.

Let go of the dog and let it shake the excess liquid out of its ears. After a minute or so, take cotton balls and gently wipe the inside of the ears. This will pick up any extra liquid and dirt that did not come out when the dog shook its head.

Give the dog a treat to reward it for sitting through this process. The treat will help it associate an ear cleaning with a reward, which may make the next ear cleaning easier.
