How to Protect a Dog's Ears When Swimming

Dogs love to play on the beach or at the lake as much as humans do. They get to roam around, and even play fetch. Many dogs actually enjoy swimming, and will fetch balls or sticks thrown in to the water. The problem is that dogs are very susceptible to otitis externa, or an ear infection. Ear infections can be quite painful for your dog, so it is best that you prevent an infection from occurring by protecting the ears.

Things You'll Need

  • Wax ear plugs
  • Aquabandit
  • Towel
  • Vinegar
  • Water
  • Squirt bottle

Instructions

    • 1

Mold a pair of wax ear plugs in to the outside of your dog's ears. This will prevent a large portion of water getting in to the ears.

    • 2

Wrap an Aquabandit around your dog's head, being sure to cover the ears. This device is made specifically to protect your dog's ears while he is swimming. It works like a swimming cap for humans. Using this in addition to the wax ear plugs will ensure that no water enters your dog's ears.

    • 3

Dry your dog's ears with a towel when he is finished swimming.

    • 4

Apply a drying solution after the swimming session if you think water got in the ears. Purchase a drying solution or make your own from 1 tsp. vinegar, and 1 tsp. water. Gently squirt this solution into your dog's ears. It will dry up any remaining water.
