How to Clean a Dog's Ears When They Are Infected

It is not uncommon for several dog breeds, such as Basset hounds and beagles, to frequently suffer from ear infections. In fact, this ailment can plague just about every dog breed. These infections can be caused by yeast, mites and bacteria, or they can occur as a result of an allergic reaction to dust or pollen. It is important to properly clean and care for your dog's ears if he is suffering from a potentially painful ear infection.

Things You'll Need

  • Gauze
  • Cotton balls
  • Water
  • Vinegar
  • Ear cleaning solution
  • Ear infection medication

Instructions

With a piece of gauze, clean out any waxy buildup or foul-smelling discharge that you find in your dog's ears. Use a clean piece of gauze for each ear.

    • 2

Soak a cotton ball in a mixture of water and a few drops of white vinegar. Instead of the vinegar and water mixture, you can also use a solution that is specially formulated to clean a dog's ears .

    • 3

Gently rub the outside of your dog's ear canals with the cotton ball.

    • 4

Squeeze a small amount of ear infection medication into each of the dog's ears. This medication should only be administered under direct orders of your veterinarian.

    • 5

Allow your dog to shake her head after the liquid has been placed inside. This will help any excess liquid that is inside the ear dry, so that it does not cause any further irritation later.

Repeat this process for at least three to four days, or until the signs of infection, such as a foul odor and a light discharge, have disappeared.
