Deramaxx is a veterinary product made by Novartis Animal Health U.S. It is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that is primarily aimed at reducing symptoms associated with osteoarthritis. This Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved drug has been administered to more than a million dogs since its introduction about two years ago. Its core molecule is deracoxib, which is known to inhibit inflammation in the bones.

Pain Reliever
-
Deramaxx is advised and prescribed for dogs that have osteoarthritis or are recovering after surgery for osteoarthritis. By suppressing the symptoms that cause pain, Deramaxx can help dogs recover from the painful affliction and the pain associated with surgery. The standard dosage of one chewable tablet once a day is shown to be enough to control pain for almost the entire day.
Focused Targeting of Pain
-
Deracoxib is thought to work better at pain management than other NSAIDs by focusing specifically on targeting pain-causing enzymes.
Painkillers act on the pain-causing enzymes, cox 1 and cox 2, by blocking the enzyme's action. Both of these enzymes also have other uses such as producing chemicals that are needed for the body. The difference between these two enzymes is that while both produce chemicals the body needs, cox 2 also produces chemicals that cause inflammation in the joints.
Older, traditional versions of NSAIDs such as ibuprofen and naproxen work on the system by halting the action of both the pain-causing enzymes cox 1 and cox 2. This action neutralizes the pain-reducing ability of the body because it cannot distinguish between the two kinds of enzymes.
Deramaxx, on the other hand, works by inhibiting only cox 2 enzymes.
Multiple Uses
-
While Dermamaxx is primarily administered for osteoarthritis, it can also be administered to dogs that experience pain caused by dental extraction. Another of its important uses involves providing pain relief in dogs with hip dysplasia. This is a condition in which the bones of the hips are malformed, causing the dog to limp and experience discomfort.
