Dog Food & Seizures

There seems to be a huge association between the types of dog food you feed your pets and the likelihood that they will develop a central nervous system disorder, such as seizures.

  1. Generic Dog Foods

    • Scientists have discovered the connection between dog foods and potential seizures. Many low-grade dog foods don't contain the vitamins and nutrients that dogs need in order to develop and maintain a properly functioning central nervous system.

    Vitamins and Nutrients

    • Vitamin and nutrient deficiencies will trigger seizures in dogs, no matter their age. Whether it's generic dog foods that contain nearly no vitamins and nutrients, or it's the preservatives that are added to the brand name dog foods that will trigger seizures in dogs, it comes right down to what pets are fed.

    Nutritional Labels

    • Even if the dog food labels say they contain no preservatives, it only means that they weren't added by the dog food company. Preservatives could have been added at the rendering plant before the dog food company received the ingredients.

    Raw-Hides

    • Its also important to watch the labels that are printed on raw-hide packages, because many of them also contain preservatives.

    Health Dog Foods

    • Look for dog foods that are made with whole meat proteins, the fewest amount of grains and no artificial preservatives. This will not only help your dog feel better, but also will reduce the likelihood of seizures.

    Artificial Preservatives

    • The specific artificial preservatives that generally trigger seizures in dogs are ethoxyguin, BHA, and BHT, although you take a risk by feeding your dog any food that contains artificial preservatives.
