Ingestible Flea & Tick Medication for Dogs

Fleas cause discomfort and itching. Ticks spread disease. These parasites pose a tough problem to dog owners. Topical flea medications, shampoos and dips can cause dry skin and even more itching. Indigestible flea medication eliminates both problems.

  1. Types

    • As of 2010, there were three indigestible flea and tick medications approved for use in dogs: Program is administered once a month, Capstar is given on an as-needed basis and Sentinel is administered once a month. All three products are manufactured by Novartis Animal Health.

    Identification

    • Program indigestible flea medication contains the chemical lufenuron, which kills flea eggs. Sentinel contains the chemicals lufenuron and milbemycin oxime and is effective against flea eggs and larvae. Capstar, which contains the active ingredient nitenpyram, kills adult fleas.

    Misconceptions

    • There is no known oral flea medication that works to kill fleas and repel ticks. All tick repellent medications are topical in nature.

    Considerations

    • Capstar and Sentinel are safe for use in pregnant and nursing dogs. The use of Program in pregnant, nursing, aged or ill animals is not advised.

    Warning

    • Some animals experience an allergic reaction when given oral flea control medications. Side effects are rare but serious. Speak to a licensed veterinary medical provider if you feel your dog may be experiencing an adverse reaction.
