What Is a Kennel Cough Shot for Dogs?

Kennel cough is a canine upper respiratory problem caused by several viruses and bacteria. Vaccination is a good way for pet owners to protect their dogs from the disease.

  1. Types

    • There are two types of vaccines for kennel cough. One is injected and the other is administered intranasally (through the nostrils).

    Injectable Vaccine

    • The injectable vaccine must be given in two doses. The second shot is given three to four weeks after the first one, and it does not protect against kennel cough until a week or two after the second dose.

    Intranasal Vaccine

    • The intranasal vaccine requires only one dose and provides protection faster than the injected vaccine. It takes only a few days for protection to kick in.

    Side Effects

    • Mild signs of kennel cough may result as a reaction to the vaccination. The dog may also shed the virus to other dogs within the first few days of the vaccine. Keep the dog away from other dogs for three or four days following vaccination.

    Follow-Up

    • After being initially vaccinated as a puppy, a dog will need a yearly booster shot. If the dog is at high risk for kennel cough, a vaccine may be administered every six months.
