Fleas are parasites that infect your pet, feeding on their blood. In addition to causing itching and general discomfort, fleas act as carriers of other parasites and disease. The eradication of fleas is frequently accomplished with the use of chemical solutions. One such solution is flea dip, a mixture of chemicals diluted with water that is applied to your dog's skin. Flea dips are effective and economical, especially in the treatment of heavily infested dogs or large dogs.
Things You'll Need
- Flea dip
- Plastic apron
- Rubber gloves
- Eye goggles (optional)
- Bath tub
Instructions
Select a flea dip. The safest, most effective flea dips contain the chemical known as pyrethrin as the active ingredient, according to "The Clinical Textbook for Veterinary Technicians."
Read the manufacturer's instructions. Every dip is mixed with water, but each individual solution requires a different ratio of dilution. The label or instruction sheet contains this information. In addition, the manufacturer's instructions contain vital safety information concerning your dog's health and your own health.
Cover yourself with personal protective equipment. At the very least, a pair of sturdy rubber gloves should be worn to protect your skin from the chemicals contained in flea dip. A plastic apron is useful if the dog you are dipping likes to shake or splash. Goggles are optional, but likewise protect your eyes from chemical damage.
Mix the flea dip according to the manufacturer's instructions. Usually this can be done inside a bathtub for easy application to your dog.
Place your dog in the flea dip solution. Soak your dog's entire body, from the tip of his nose to the tip of his tail and everything in between. Pay special attention to avoid getting flea dip solution in your dog's eyes, nose, mouth, anus and genitalia. You need to apply flea dip around these areas, but care should be taken to avoid getting chemicals in these sensitive areas.
Leave the solution on your dog. Most flea dips require the solution to be left on your dog without rinsing. Some flea dips suggest rinsing after a period of time. Refer to the manufacturer's instructions.
Repeat the flea dip every three weeks or as recommended by the manufacturer or your veterinarian.
