Pericardial effusion, when fluid builds up in the sac that surrounds the heart, leads to increased pressure in the heart and right side congestive heart failure. Several conditions in dogs cause this build up of fluid.
-
Symptoms
-
The signs of fluid around the heart are difficulty breathing, fast breathing, fast heart rate, pale gums and a swollen abdomen.
Causes
-
Pericardial effusion can be caused by a genetic condition or birth defect, problems in blood clotting, cancer or the presence of a foreign object.
Treatment
-
Treatment of pericardial effusion usually involves treatment of the underlying condition causing the fluid buildup. If the pericardium itself is the cause, it may need to be surgically removed.
Medication
-
If the fluid around the heart is not due to an underlying condition that can be cured or treated, the congestive heart failure itself can be treated with medications, including nitroglycerin, benazapril, digoxin or dietary supplements.
Prevention
-
If your dog has congestive heart failure, you help him live a longer life by limiting strenuous activity, avoiding treats with high sodium content and keeping him inside when very hot or humid outside.
