A Shetland Sheepdog, or Sheltie, for short, is known for its beauitful, thick coat. A Sheltie's coat has an outer layer that repells water and an inner coat that protects the skin against temperature extremes. Most Shelties' coats do not fully develop until they are between three and five years old. From puppyhood to this time, it is important to take steps that will help your Sheltie develop a bigger, thicker coat.

Spay or neuter your sheltie as this can encourage fuller coat growth.
Feed your Sheltie a balanced diet. Sufficient amounts of protein will provide your dog's body with the proteins it needs to grow strong, healthy hair, while fats will keep the coat soft and shiny.
Brush your Sheltie each day. This will remove loose hairs and stimulate the hair follicles to produce new growth.
Have your Sheltie's coat groomed regularly, about every eight weeks. This will help reduce matting. When matting occurs, the hair must be cut to the skin which compromises the size of the Sheltie's coat until the hair regrows.
Give your Sheltie a dietary supplement that contains Omega 6 and Omega 3 fatty acids. These encourage healthy skin and hair growth and can be found in your local pet supply store.
