Newborn puppies have many needs to have the best chance at survival. The mother dog will generally be able to attend to these needs easily and without interference from the owner. However, Mother Nature occasionally needs a helping hand, and recognizing when puppies could benefit from supplemental bottle feedings will ensure happy, healthy puppies.

Orphans
-
In some instances, the mother will die or abandon her litter. In these instances, regular bottle-feeding will be required until the puppies are weaned. Puppies should be offered a slightly warmed bottle every two hours around the clock.
Premature Birth
-
Premature puppies can also benefit from supplemental feedings from a bottle, especially those having difficulty nursing or locating a nipple. Premature puppies should be encouraged to drink the mother̵7;s milk to ensure they are receiving adequate amounts of antibodies from the mother. If the puppies cannot nurse, milking the mother and feeding the milk via bottle may become necessary.
Runts
-
The runt of the litter is generally smaller and weaker than most of the others. This may reduce the chances that he is getting adequate nutrition. Bottle-feeding the runt will ensure that he has the best chance of survival.
Infection
-
Sick puppies may require bottle-feeding. If they are more vocal, wander aimlessly or appear to be listless, a warmed bottle of mother̵7;s milk or commercially prepared formula should be offered to get calories into his system while undergoing treatment.
Considerations
-
During the first four weeks, any puppy that does not appear to be thriving should be offered supplemental bottle feedings to ensure he is receiving enough nutrition. Puppies older than 4 weeks can begin consuming solid foods.
