Is it Safe to Take Dogs for a Walk in the Rain?

Many pet owners treat their dogs as delicate, easily damaged objects. But even the most pampered dog shares a genetic inheritance with the wolf. Your dog, large or small, is certainly hardy enough for a pleasant walk in the rain.

  1. Working Dogs

    • Retrievers are more than comfortable in water.

Many sporting and herding dogs, originally bred as water dogs or all-purpose outdoor dogs, love water of all kinds and do not seem to notice rain.

    Finicky Dogs

    • Some dogs would do anything to avoid this.

Other dogs dislike rain and try to resist going out in wet weather. Some fastidious animals will even dodge puddles.

    Training

    • Don't forget your umbrella.

Owners can train a reluctant dog to go out in the rain by cheerfully walking and playing with the dog in the rain. It will learn to associate rain with fun.

    Cold Temperatures

    • Chihuahuas don't handle cold weather very well.

Cold temperatures can be more of a problem than rain for delicate or short-haired breeds, older dogs or weak animals. A warm coat may benefit such dogs.

    Hazard

    • Thunderstorms should be avoided.

Storms are not safe for you or your dog. Keep your dog safely inside until the lightning has passed.
