Symptoms of Heart Failure in Dogs After a Tooth Extraction

Having a dog's tooth extracted may result in complications. If a dog is mopey and acting lethargic even after the anesthesia wears off, it may have symptoms of heart failure.

  1. Significance

    • Heart failure is the inability of the heart to pump blood properly and can lead to death.

    Identification

    • Symptoms of heart failure can be subtle or pronounced. Symptoms include tiring easily, lethargy, lack of appetite, rapid breathing, difficulty breathing and fluid buildup.

    Effects

    • A dog may lose weight and have swollen legs and abdominal distention due to a buildup of fluid. Eventually this can lead to shock, coma and death.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Brush your dog's teeth every day with a toothpaste approved for dogs and bring your dog to the veterinarian for regular teeth cleaning and checkups.

    Warning

    • If a dog shows any symptoms of heart failure, it should be brought to the veterinarian immediately.
