Is Frontline Harmful for Dogs to Ingest?

Frontline is a topical pet treatment designed to kill fleas and control future outbreaks. The product is applied directly to the skin and is not meant to be ingested. Follow the instructions carefully to ensure the safety of your pet.

  1. Warning

    • Fipronil, a pesticide, is the active ingredient in Frontline. According to the National Pesticide Information Center, Fipronil should not be ingested and exposure can cause illness in both pets and humans.

    Symptoms

    • Ingestion of Fipronil can result in symptoms such as nausea, stomach pain, dizziness, drooling and seizures.

    Toxicity

    • The dosage of Fipronil in one application of Frontline is approximately one-fourth the amount determined to be moderately toxic to dogs by the Environmental Protection Agency. Reactions from minor exposure to Fipronil generally abate without treatment.

    Prevention

    • Keep treatment applicators out of the reach of children and pets. Apply Frontline only as directed and dispose of the opened applicator immediately. Wash your hands thoroughly after use.

    Consult a Veterinarian

    • Consult your veterinarian if you believe your pet's flea medication was applied incorrectly or accidentally ingested.
