Natural Flea & Tick Collars for Dogs

Natural flea and tick collars use oils from plants that kill fleas and ticks but are harmless to animals and people. The collars are worn continuously around the dog's neck.

  1. Oils

    • There are several kinds of oil that are used in flea and tick collars. Two of the more common oils used are thyme oil and clove oil, which also is known as Eugenol.

    Octopamine

    • Octopamine is a neurotransmitter that insects such as fleas, ticks and mosquitoes produce in their bodies. The plant oils block this neurotransmitter, which kills the insect almost instantly.

    EcoPure

    • EcoPure is a brand name of a natural flea and tick collar. It comes with a cotton collar that can be cut to fit your dog and a solution with the plant oils in it that is applied to the collar as often as needed.

    Caution

    • Flea and tick collars of any kind should not be used on dogs until they are at least 12 weeks old.

    Why Natural?

    • Traditional flea and tick collars have chemicals in them that could damage the dog's liver, cause an allergic reaction or decrease immune function.

    Other Options

    • The plant oils also are used in squeeze-on treatments, powders, sprays and shampoos that can all be used to get rid of fleas and ticks.
