Candida yeast infections can occur in both animals and people, and is an overgrowth of yeast in the Candida family. An overgrowth of this yeast is commonly known as "thrush," and can also manifest as a skin rash (like diaper rash).

Symptoms of Candida yeast infections include itchy or red skin, irritated skin with odor in skin folds, lethargy, depression or gastrointestinal problems.

Testing for this yeast must be done by a vet. There are no over-the-counter or home test for this type of infection.
Diagnosis

A vet will take a skin sample from an infected area and observe the cells under a microscope to identify the yeast. Skin samples can be taken by using a swab, a piece of clear tape, or a scalpel to remove cells for observation. A dye is applied to the cells to determine the presence of infection.
Treatment

Some infections will clear on their own, but recurring or severe infections will likely require anti-fungal medications.
Long Term Solutions

While medication will help to correct the immediate infection, but identifying the underlying cause of the yeast infection will address the problem long term. Yeast infections can be caused by stress, diet, disease or as a reaction to a medication.
