Powder Medication for Animal Ear Mites

Your pet may be suffering from ear mites if you notice him scratching his ears (accompanied by a dark, flaky discharge) or shaking his head frequently. If the infestation of ear mites is severe enough, your pet's ears may bleed. Treatment is necessary to prevent further complications.

  1. Identification

    • Ear mites are microscopic parasites that feed on your pet's blood. They cause discomfort and an itching sensation.

    Treatment

    • Treatment consists of using an insecticidal solution that kills ear mites. A secondary medication may be used to soothe the skin and dull itching sensations.

    Types

    • The most common medications for the treatment of ear mites are pyrethrins or ivermectin. They come in liquid, powder or cream form.

    Misconceptions

    • Ear mites can live on any part of an animal's body, not just the ear.

    Warning

    • If the infestation is severe enough, an animal may scratch himself to the point of bleeding. A secondary infection may occur. Seek veterinary help for the treatment of severe ear mite infestation.
