Hair Loss in Mastiffs

Hair loss, also known as alopecia, in mastiffs can be caused by a number of problems. Various allergic reactions, nutritional deficiencies or hormone and metabolism imbalances are some reasons hair loss may occur in your dog.

  1. Pyoderma

    • Hair loss in mastiffs can result from a common skin condition called "pyoderma," which is a bacterial infection. Pyoderma can be identified by a range of lesions that may appear on your dog. In severe cases, the lesions, which resemble ringworm, will form and eventually scale, resulting in hair that is easily pulled from your dog.

    Hypothyroidism

    • Mastiffs can suffer from hypothyroidism resulting in hair loss. Hypothyroidism is the underproduction of thyroid hormones that regulate the metabolism of your dog. If your mastiff has low thyroid levels, the veterinarian may prescribe thyroid medication. This is usually a lifetime treatment requiring the monitoring of thyroid levels.

    Vitamin A Deficiency

    • Other possible reasons for hair loss in mastiffs can be caused by a vitamin deficiency. Vitamin A responsive dermatosis can result in hair that is easily pulled out. A lifetime treatment of vitamin A is mostly prescribed for this condition. Vitamin B, copper and zinc deficiencies can also result in hair loss in mastiffs.

    Fleas

    • Hair loss in mastiffs may also be caused by a hypersensitivity to flea bites. Also known as flea allergy dermatitis, this condition is your dog's reaction to flea saliva. Excessive itching can result in hair loss. Antihistamines and steroids are often prescribed. It is important that the control of fleas is maintained in your dog's environment.

    Treatments

    • Treatment for the prevention of hair loss in your mastiff will vary depending on the diagnosis. Be sure to consult with your veterinarian before making any diagnosis or beginning any treatments.
