Hair Loss in Pomeranians

Pomeranians are well known for their long, thick coats and furry manes. However, a variety of factors can cause Pomeranians to lose their hair. Pom owners should familiarize themselves with some of the causes of hair loss so they can properly treat their pets should this occur.

  1. Puppy

    • A Pomeranian will begin experiencing hair loss at around five to six months of age, continuing until the puppy is eight to 10 months of age. This is a normal part of the puppy's growing its adult coat.

    Allergies

    • A Pomeranian may develop allergies to wheat, corn, or even dog shampoo. Allergies will often cause hair loss; however, changing the diet or shampoo will usually resolve the problem.

    Alopecia

    • Severe hair loss in Pomeranians is also known as Alopecia, or Black Skin Disease. It is characterized by large areas of hair loss, usually on the back half of the Pomeranian, along with darkening of the skin, according to Rise N Shine Poms.

    Hormones

    • A disease known as Adrenal Sex Hormone Responsive Dermatosis is prevalent in Pomeranians, according to Pet Education. It is characterized by hair loss on the neck, tail or back legs, leaving only a fuzzy undercoat.

    Pregnancy

    • Pregnant and nursing Pomeranians may experience temporary hair loss due to hormonal changes. Hair almost always grows back when puppies are weaned.

    Pests

    • Lice, mange, or dandruff mites can all cause hair loss in Pomeranians. A veterinarian can examine your pet and prescribe a shampoo for you to use on her that will eliminate these pests.
