Hair Loss in Poodles

Hair loss with most dogs is not common; however, it occurs more often in poodles due to an inflammatory skin disease. The disease, which leads to the destruction of glands, is usually hereditary. The medical name for this condition is Sebaceous Adenitis (SA) or also Glaucomatous Sebaceous Adentitis.

  1. Age

    • This disease becomes active in poodles between one and three years old. It is thought to run in the poodle's genetics. The disease starts on top of the head and spreads to the rest of the body. It also tends to worsen with time.

    Cause

    • The cause of this condition in poodles is unknown, but it seems to be an attack on the immune system of the sebaceous glands responsible for the production of sebum (oil) on the skin.

    Symptoms

    • Besides the loss of hair, itching, red bumps and a musty odor are other signs of SA. The skin becomes dry and scaly, which results in hair loss.

    Effects

    • This disease is cosmetic and is not harmful to the dog. It will not affect the dog's general health or lifespan.

    Treatment

    • There is no cure for SA, but there are long-term treatments. Bathing the poodle several times a week with medicated shampoos may soothe the skin and remove excess scaling. You can apply baby oil to your pet's skin and leave it there for 30 minutes. You will need to bathe your poodle several times to remove the excess oil. This treatment may help your poodle feel better, but repeat this treatment often.
