Skin lesions are uncomfortable and sometimes painful for your dog. They can be the result of a variety of conditions and should be treated quickly.
-
Types
-
Itchy bumps, wounds that will not heal, wounds that drain and painful or tender wounds on the skin are all considered to be skin lesions.
Causes
-
Causes of skin lesions include injury, abscesses, dermatitis, bacterial infections, stings, bites, burns, canine acne, demodectic mange, pressure ulcers and tumors.
Diagnosis
-
The veterinarian performs a thorough physical exam, takes the dog's medical history, examines discharge (if any) from the wound and may perform a biopsy to determine the cause and treatment for the lesion.
Treatment
-
Medicated shampoos and creams, along with oral medications and antibiotics are typical treatments for skin lesions; however, depending on the cause of the lesion further treatment may be necessary.
Warning
-
It is imperative to seek immediate medical attention for your dog's skin lesions, as they may be contagious or may be the result of a more serious (and possibly fatal) condition.
