Diatomaceous earth is a fine white powder, made of the ground fossilized shells of a type of sea algae called diatoms. The individual particles have sharp edges which slice through the hard outer skeleton of fleas and other insects, causing them to lose water, dehydrate and die.

Types of Diatomaceous Earth
-
There are two main types of diatomaceous earth: pool grade, which is used as a filtering agent for swimming pools; and food grade, which is added to stored grains and animal feeds. Only food grade diatomaceous earth should be used on or around pets.
Use on Pets
-
You can sprinkle diatomaceous earth directly onto your pet, working it into the fur, to kill fleas. This should be done sparingly, as it may dry out the pet's skin.
Use in the House
-
Diatomaceous earth can be sprinkled on carpeting and pet bedding and sleeping areas. It can also be placed around entryways, cracks, and crevices to discourage insects from entering the house.
Use in the Yard
-
A hose sprayer that mixes diatomaceous earth with water can be used to evenly spread the product in the yard. Once the water evaporates, the powder is left behind.
Safety Considerations
-
Food-grade diatomaceous earth is considered very safe. The product can be irritating or drying to the eyes and mucus membranes. If you are treating a large area, you should wear a mask to avoid breathing in the powder.
