Penicillin Dosage for Canine Infections

Dogs can develop many types of infections, and it is important to seek treatment in order to keep your dog at its optimal health. Your veterinarian is likely to prescribe an antibiotic, such as penicillin, for your dog's infection. Follow your vet's advice carefully to make sure your dog is back to feeling like itself as soon as possible.

  1. Penicillin

    • Penicillin is an antibiotic that can be used to treat many types of infections, both internal and external. It can be administered via an injection by your veterinarian or in pill form. Amoxicillin is a common form of penicillin that is prescribed to dogs and is often used for ear, skin, urinary tract, bladder or upper respiratory infections.

    Dosage

    • Allow your veterinarian to determine the correct dosage of penicillin for your dog. However, if using Amoxicillin, the dosage for dogs is usually 5 to 10 mg per pound ever 12 to 24 hours. Ask your veterinarian how long your dog should remain on this drug.

    Side Effects

    • Penicillin can cause certain side effects in dogs, though side effects are rare. The dog may develop flatulence and may have digestive issues, such as diarrhea or nausea. In some cases, a fungal infection may develop. Contact your veterinarian if your dog displays any side effects.

    Allergies

    • Some dogs may be allergic to penicillin, so it is important to work with your veterinarian when using this medication. Watch for signs of an allergic reaction, such as hives, shortness of breath, swelling, seizures and difficulty breathing. A reaction can be life-threatening, so seek veterinary attention immediately.

    Precautions

    • It is important to keep your dog on antibiotics for the full course of treatment and not to stop giving your dog the medication just because symptoms have gone away; this can cause bacteria to build an immunity to the drug. Do not self-medicate your dog. Involve your veterinarian in your dog's illnesses and treatments in order to make sure the correct types and amounts of drugs are used.
