Being a dog owner, there will come a time when you'll have to deal with worms---intestinal parasites. Luckily, there are a number of different worming products on the market today.
-
Types of Worms
-
Tapeworms, whipworms, roundworms and hookworms are the most common. Treating them can be accomplished in a variety of ways. Of course, diagnosing the kind of worms needs to be done by a veterinarian.
Praziquantel (Prescription Name Droncit)
-
Praziquantel is available in an over-the-counter formulation, as well as by prescription. It is used to treat tapeworm infestations, usually found in dogs that are heavily infested with fleas.
Fenbendazole
-
Unlike praziquantel, fenbendazole treats a variety of different parasites---roundworms, hookworms, whipworms and tapeworms. Whereas praziquantel can be administered in just one dose, fenbendazole is used over a three-day period.
Pyrantel pamoate
-
Pyrantel pamoate is used in the treatment of hookworms and roundworms, and is widely used because it is safe to use on puppies, adult dogs and elderly dogs, as well as pregnant and nursing dogs.
The Best Wormer
-
There is no one wormer that is "best," since each has different advantages and disadvantages. You might want to use a broad spectrum wormer such as fenbendazole, or you might want to use one that is specific to the kind of worm that your dog has---such as praziquantel, in the case of tapeworms. To find the wormer that is best, consult your veterinarian.
