How to Use Frontline Plus for Large Dogs on a Small Dog

Frontline is a popular topical medication for protecting your dog from fleas. The "Plus" version even kills eggs and larvae in addition to adult fleas and ticks. Used once a month as directed Frontline or Frontline Plus can greatly aid in keeping your dog flee-free--but it can get expensive, especially if you have more than one dog. Fortunately, you can use Frontline Plus for Large Dogs, which has a lower cost per unit, on your small dog to save money on your pet maintenance costs.

Things You'll Need

  • Frontline Plus for Large Dogs
  • Helper (Optional)

Instructions

  1. Usage

    • 1

Determine how much Frontline Plus you are going to use. One pipette (plastic squeeze vial) is meant for a dog 45 to 88 lbs. Therefore, if your dog is 30 to 35 lbs., half a pipette would be appropriate for one dose. If your dog is 15 to 20 lbs, use about 1/4 of the pipette.

    • 2

Prepare your dog for the treatment by calming it and having it sit. By making sure it is settled, you help to ensure that it does not jostle you into using more than you intended.

    • 3

Part your dog's hair between its shoulder blades. This is where you will be applying the Frontline, because it is the best spot to prevent it from trying to scratch or lick the Frontline. If you were able to recruit a helper, then holding the hair parted will be that person's job. This will help you to be as careful as possible when performing the application.

    • 4

Hold the applicator upright (skinny end up) and cut or lift off the plastic tab, then peel the foil down. Snap the tip away from your face and body. The pipette is now open and ready to pour.

    • 5

Apply the amount of Frontline you determined in Step 1. Dispense it slowly; be careful not to use more than you intended. Make sure that the liquid is dripping onto the dog's skin and not its hair.

    Storage

    • 6

Turn the applicator upright again--with the open tip up- and place it back in the Frontline Plus box, ensuring it maintains its upright position.

    • 7

Store the Frontline box somewhere where you are sure it will stay upright. so the pipette will not leak out the rest of its contents. Wedging it against a wall or shelf with something heavier can be a good way to do this.

    • 8

Reuse the same pipette and dosage in one month to prevent new infestations.
