Over-the-Counter Medicine for Dogs with Allergies

Humans aren't the only creatures on the planet that get allergies. Dogs do, too, and sometimes they get it even worse than their owners. If your dog is constantly scratching itself or has a case of sneezes that goes on forever, chances are it has allergies. Luckily, there are some over-the-counter medicines that can help clear up your dog's allergies. Always consult your veterinarian before giving any of these medicines to your dog.

  1. Benadryl

    • Benadryl blocks the effects of histamine, which causes allergy-related itchiness and swelling. Dogs should be given 0.5 to 2 mg doses (depending on size) two to three times daily.

    Chlor-Trimeton

    • Chlor-Trimeton is another type of antihistamine that can be used on dogs, though it can cause a reaction in certain breeds, so talk to your veterinarian. The dose is 1 to 4 mg two to three times per day.

    Antihist-1

    • Antihist-1 is another allergy medicine that blocks histamine 1 (H1) receptors, which blocks itchiness and swelling, including in the throat to prevent coughs. Give your dog 0.025 to 0.05 mg twice a day.

    Dayhist

    • Dayhist should be given to dogs in the same dosage (0.05 to 0.025 mg twice daily). It will block histamine receptors and help cure allergic reactions in the dog.

    Tavist

    • This is another kind of over-the-counter allergy medicine taken in small doses, like Antihist-1 and Dayhist. Some side effects can occur, so make sure to look for them if you give this to your dog.
