Following any surgery, a dog owner must follow the veterinarian's instructions closely. Otherwise, various complications such as infection or serious injury will occur. Dog owners must watch their dogs at all times following any surgical procedure.

Sutures
-
In the days after a surgery, sutures can break-off, unravel or completely disappear within the incision. If the surgery site becomes red, swollen or new discharge appears, see a veterinarian immediately.
Swelling
-
You should expect swelling following surgery, but excessive swelling indicates a potential infection. Excessive swelling can also irritate and remove sutures, which will require a trip to the veterinarian.
Discharge
-
You should expect clear discharge. However, dogs with excessive blood, dripping or unusual color discharge should see a veterinarian to rule out infection or other issues, such as the inner sutures unraveling.
Tissue
-
One of the most serious complications that can arise occurs when the inner tissue becomes visible through the incision. If this occurs, your dog requires immediate veterinary care.
Warning
-
You can cover your dog's wound using a sterile bandage or place an E-Collar around their neck to prevent excessive chewing or licking. Both actions can cause serious infections or damage and scaring to the surgery site.
