Hair Loss & Lethargy in Dogs

Hair loss and lethargy, when paired together, have a few likely causes. Anxiety or boredom could cause the dog to lick itself, causing hair loss. Hypothyroidism is a hormonal imbalance that results in hair loss and lethargy. Other causes are parasites, ringworm and Cushing's disease.

  1. Anxiety

    • Dog hair loss and lethargy could be symptoms of dog anxiety, boredom or stress. This is called acral lick dermatitis. When a dog is upset, it could lick itself obsessively, causing hair loss and skin irritation.

    Anxiety treatment

    • There is no one right treatment for acral lick dermatitis. Your veterinarian could help with the dog's individual needs. In general, the best treatment for this condition is to create a less stressful or boring environment for the dog.

    Hypothyroidism

    • Lethargy and hair loss are two of the symptoms of hypothyroidism, a hormonal imbalance disease caused by thyroid problems. Other symptoms of hypothyroidism include bacterial infections, obesity, slowed heart rate and skin pigment changes.

    Hypothyroidism treatment

    • Hypothyroidism can be treated with oral tablets or liquids prescribed by a vet. These medications replace hormones that are not being produced. In time, symptoms such as hair loss will diminish.

    Other Causes

    • Other causes of hair loss in dogs include parasite invasion, ringworm and Cushing's disease.
