Dry Skin on the Tips of Ears on a Dog

There are several possibilities in the diagnoses of dry skin on the tips of a dog's ears. Sarcoptic Mange (Scabies) or Demodectic Mange is most often the cause. This parasitic mite causes itching and skin rashes. That can lead to other types of skin infection. Loss of hair and crusting of the skin occurs especially on the tips of the ears. Ear mites cause irritation and infection mostly in the inner ear.

  1. Identification and General Maintenance

    • Groom your dog by brushing her coat often in order to identify and recognize any rashes, parasites or skin disorders. Avoid bathing your dog often, especially with shampoo, because it can dry out the natural oils of the skin. Make sure your dog is well-hydrated and has good nutrition. Avoid putting her near garden pesticides or strong chemicals in general, according to DachWorld.com.

    Diagnosis

    • Have a veterinarian diagnose the skin disorder. Mange is usually suspected based on the location and appearance or the patches or lesions. Get a skin scraping test done to assist in the identification of the parasite. The doctor also will look for lice, fleas and ticks.

    Treatment

    • Have your dog's affected areas clipped and washed with an antiseptic. Your veterinarian may have you use antimite dips. Avoid getting the dip in your dog's eyes and ears. Should that happen, contact your veterinarian right away.
